How We Work...

How do I do morning baskets, intervention, center time, and small groups?

The blue chart is my center chart.  The students names are on the animals.  The pictures are of the choices they can do once they finish their work.  For math there are math games that include counting, number order, patterning, etc.  For literacy there is the tree house, computers, literacy games, Promethean Board, letter magnets, write the room, big books, etc.

This year, the way my schedule worked out, I have started doing morning baskets along with math and literacy centers.

Morning Baskets:
Grouping: at assigned seats
(I seat my students according to abilities, so that there is a range, not just high/low, in case someone needs help)
Time:7:30-8:00
What happens?: The students do whatever paper is in the basket that matches their table (possibly 2 papers, depending on the difficulty of the paper). These activities usually include some type of literacy or math review I rotate the papers from basket to basket every morning (I have blue, green, red, and yellow).  On Fridays they all do the same activity (usually the next page in their ABC journal or some other type of review.

Intervention:
Grouping: I pull students who need a little extra help.  I pull them according to what skills they need help with.
Time: 8:00-8:30
What happens?: Students come to my table and we play games that help with skills such as letter naming, initial sounds, and number sense.  I've created a bunch of new things (will post some of them soon.   I've also started using some of Julie Lee's Intervention packs (on TPT). Check her out!  She's AWESOME!

Math Centers:

Grouping: Center groups are also grouped with a range of abilities.
Time:whenever morning baskets are finished-9:00
What happens?:Each day students go to a different table and complete an activity.  Each center usually covers a different skill that we've already learned.  Practice, practice, practice= understanding (hopefully)
What happens after?: Students pick a math choice that is pictured by their name on the center chart.

Literacy Centers:
Grouping: Center groups are also grouped with a range of abilities.
Time: 9:30-10:30
What happens?: Each day students go to a different table and complete an activity.  Each center usually covers a different skill that we've already learned.  Though there is an hour for center time, I do not rotate.  The students have 2 papers in their center baskets that they must do before doing their choices.
What happens after?: Students pick a literacy choice that is pictured by their name on the center chart.

Small Groups:
Grouping: Small groups are grouped according to similar abilities.
Time: 9:30-10:30
What happens?:  While students are working in centers I pull small groups to my table.  We use Scott Foresman at our school, but I also take this time to work on skills each group needs help on the most.  For example, one group may really need help on initial sounds, so we'll play lots of IS games.
