Penguins and Polar Bears A-Plenty

This week we learned all about penguins and polar bears.  My kids LOVED learning about penguins.  They think penguins are the coolest animals and I think I may have to agree!  Here are some pictures of some of the fun things we did!

Morning Work

Count the fish by 2's.  Find the baby penguin.  Put them in order and write the number.

Count the penguins by 10's.  Find the matching penguin.  Put them in order and write the number.

Math Centers

How many fish can you buy if each fish costs 1 cent?

I made these two things to help with tally marks and skip counting.  The kids refer to them all the time when they can't think of the answer!

 Literacy Centers

I tried to "trick" them with using two colors in a sentence, but most of them did great!

Art Center...SO cute!

Theme

I got this idea from Julie Lee.  My kids loved it!

I am not sure where this glyph came from, but they turned out so cute!

Mr. Penguin oh so cute,
Why so serious in your suit?
To make you laugh I would...

On Friday we learned about polar bears.   I forgot to take a picture of a polar bear.  We wrote facts on the back and put cotton balls on the front.  They turned out pretty cute!  Next year, I think I'll try some type of TLC type project.

And a few more fun pictures...

Happy Chinese New Year!  We had fortune cookies and chopsticks in the lunchroom.  So fun!
I came back in the room from hanging student work up and this little peacemaker was at my document camera "teaching" a friend who wasn't finished.  He was trying his best to make sure his friend knew exactly what to do and tried to give him enough time to write everything before he turned the page.  I love when my k-friends decide to help their friends in such sweet ways!

There is not enough time in the day to do everything I wanted to do with this unit, but next year I have some new ideas that I hope to squeeze in!

Also, if you have asked for my things and I haven't sent them to you, I am so so so so sorry!  I started grad school this month and I am trying to make all new things for each weekly theme so I am in survival mode.  Also, my jump drive burnt up this week, so it's been rather crazy trying to get things finished.  If you will e-mail me, I can try to get you the things you asked for ASAP (if it is on my computer).

Sorry such a long post!  It's been a crazy week all around!  I hope you enjoy and share with your friends!

I'm Zero the Hero and I'm Here to Say...

HOORAY HOORAY FOR THE 100TH DAY!
Wow!  What a fun week, we learned all about penguins and polar bears (check out the next post) and celebrated the 100th day of school.  We had SO MUCH fun on the 100th day!  We counted to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's.  We made a really cute 100 day hat.  We made a Fruit Loop necklace with 100 Fruit Loops.  We did 100 exercises and made pictures of ourselves at 100.  We did 100 jumping jacks. AND.....WE GOT TO SEE ZERO THE HERO!!!  When the kids came back from P.E. he jumped out from under the treehouse with lots of goodies for us!  This year was such a success, I think next year we may do even more 100 day things throughout the day.

Making our 100 Day hats.  Each kid had 10 strips.
Step 1: Write your name on EVERY strip.

Step 2: Put your strips on your spot.
Step 3: Pick a spot with a bag around the room and put 10 of whatever is in the bag on a strip.
Step 4: Put the strip on your spot and pick another....
Step 5: Once you have 10 objects on each strip, Miss Chamblee will put it all together!

This ended up being almost perfectly organized.  I had a few that got their strips mixed up, but we worked it out!

So stinking cute!

100 Exercises!

100 Fruit Loops (I think)

Zero the Hero!
The kids were expecting him to show up all day long.  When he did you could hear a pin drop.  They were in total shock!  But as they put it later, "Zero the Hero is COOL!"
Finished product. :)

SO cute!!

Winter, Winter, Where are You?

This week we continued our winter theme with lots of weather work!
We made a winter book, but I forgot (once again) to take pictures.  The kids were so good this week and we got 83% or more on all our DIBELS tests.  I am so proud of how far they have come this year!

We are still working on drawing the different fractions.

You can't see on this one, but my kids REALLY like the slash mark.  We are working really hard on putting the slash mark on groups that equal five, not on all 8 tallies.

Some kids made patterns by colors and others made patterns by the types of clothing.

This friend drew our friend Hunter. :)

Great illustration!

I wasn't focused on the spelling, just coloring and writing the sounds they heard.  They did a really great job though!  As you can see, this student didn't follow the directions and color the pictures the correct color.

I made a few new skip counting games.  The kids in their seats worked to put the numbered kids in order.  The kids LOVED this!

  We counted by 10s....

 and 5's!

Counting by 5's.  We illustrated using one had each and went back and counted by ones to check ourselves!  So smart!
